Do I Need Formal Qualifications To Train in Veterinary Acupuncture?



Yes! The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeon's have clear advice regarding the application of complementary and alternative medicine. Their Code of Professional Conduct (section 19) states:

"It is illegal, in terms of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, for non-veterinary surgeons, however qualified in the human field, to treat animals. All forms of complementary therapy that involve acts or the practise of veterinary surgery must be undertaken by a veterinary surgeon, subject to any exemption in the Act. At the same time, it is incumbent on veterinary surgeons offering any complementary therapy to ensure that they are adequately trained in its application."

Acupuncture requires an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the animals anatomy and physiology. This means that to train in veterinary acupuncture, and to practice legally. You must be a qualified veterinary surgeon and you've successfully completed further training veterinary acupuncture.

This is the case whether you want to work with horses, dogs, cats or other animals.

Where Can I Train In Veterinary Acupuncture?



  1. The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) offer professional courses. They state that you must be a licensed veterinarian or fourth year vet student (documentation must be provided) to attend their course.
